We are proud to announce the winners of the first GetApp 2015 Scholarship Contest, a campaign designed to reward bright young business minds by giving them $5,000 towards their studies.
GetApp asked students to come up with an innovative idea for an app that would transform the way business is conducted, or to write an essay explaining how apps and technology are having a positive effect on businesses in the modern world.
We know a thing or two about business apps (and modesty!), and were staggered by the quality of many of the responses. But of the hundreds of entries we received, there could only be three winners. And the successful entrants are…
First prize ($3,000): Ronald Taylor
App Idea: An app to connect property landlords/agencies with their tenants. Rent payments can be done via the app, messages sent either to the tenant or the landlord, and maintenance requests can be submitted.
Second prize ($1,500): Keith Works
App Idea: an app with a database of business contracts that can be personalized at the touch of a button and then e-signed at the same time.
Third prize ($500): Jordan Hartsfield
Essay: How technology/apps have improved business relationships
The essay talks about apps used by the fitness industry, particularly gyms. It highlights how these allow customers to book training sessions from their smartphones, track calories, follow dietary plans, and even hook into the gym’s music radio system.
When we broke the good news to winner Ronald Taylor, he was ecstatic: “This scholarship is a fantastic opportunity,” he said. “Thank you to the GetApp team for helping me continue my journey!”
Ronald explained that his winning app idea came to him after he moved into his first apartment. He was trying to pay rent and schedule in some maintenence, and he found that the process was always pretty drawn out. “There were times I would wait for days to even be acknowledged by my property manager… I could only imagine that this process could be made much simpler.” And so, his app idea to connect tenants and landlords bloomed.
Third-placed winner Jordan Hartsfield was just as excited with her scholarship prize. “As a full-time student who is financially independent, this scholarship means everything,” she said. “It shows that I can accomplish anything if I work hard and dedicate myself to my goals.”
GetApp’s CEO and co-founder, Christophe Primault praised the efforts of all the entrants. “We were hugely impressed by the quality of the responses to the contest,” he said. “It’s reassuring to know that there is a huge pool of budding disrupters out there ready to improve the way businesses work. It’s great to be able to give these students encouragement to one day hopefully be able to get their ideas off the ground.”
GetApps’ Scholarship Contest will return next year, as we continue investing in ways to provide a bright future for deserving young minds. If you’re a student with a good idea, look out for more details on this site soon.
